If you didn’t get the title, well it’s just a (Monopoly) metaphor. TH beat KE7 (yes, skipping past King Edward VII Avenue) on Thursday to secure a place in the semi-finals against KR. This promises to be a super-duper exciting match, so come down on Monday evening to be part of it!
TH started well in the first quarter, netting in a total of 8 goals. Jia Mein, a former GD, showed great potential as a GA with her clever fakes in the goal area, sometimes even catching the GS Prisca unaware. KE7 struggled to gain their footing, and could only put in one shot before the whistle was blown. It was truly good defense that prevented them from scoring. Melissa’s (GK) long arms and good gauge of the play provided plentiful counter-attacks for TH.
With the score at 8-1, TH pressed harder to bring up the score. Eliza and Liying were the shooting pair this time round. Li Ying, who did not play in the last match against Raffles as she was busy winning the badminton championship for TH, showed everyone what she was made of as a GA. Her long, yet successful dodges made her defender scrambling to catch up with her. On top of that, her successful mid-court shots showed enormous caliber, although she only picked up netball this year. Score: 13-1. As seen from the score, KE7 did not manage to score at all in the whole ten minutes. This speaks volumes of the impenetrable barrier that is Melissa (GK ) and Jia Mein(GD).
Seeing their team struggle, KE7 supporters cheered even louder for their players. This perhaps gave them some steam and they put in one more shot in the third quarter. But this was all that was allowed by the TH defense pair Shin and Rachel. Shin was on to the GS at every step that she took, causing her to make several unforced errors, giving us possession. Rachel on her part prevented the GA from running into space to receive any passes, cutting off all opportunities for them to shoot. Prisca and Liying, both freshies, worked well together that day, taking turns to receive passes Bridget and Sheryl, and putting them in. Score: 22-2
In the last quarter, seeing it was their last chance to squeeze in a couple more shots, KE7 played with greater fervency. Their passes became increasingly fast and accurate, making it harder to intercept. Still, this was not always the case. Sheryl and Amelia’s gravity-defying jumps intercepted many a ball. Their basketball skills proved invaluable in this game, unfortunately, Prisca was unable to keep up with the swift passes, letting slip many chances to score. Luckily, Amelia with her precise shooting gave TH a few more goals. Score : 26-3
This author tends to mention plays in the goal areas, as she herself is a shooter. But it is truly the mid-fielders (WD, C and WA) that tirelessly run up and down to make sure the ball gets from one end to the other. As Shin says, “it’s the sum of its parts that makes a team strong rather than zai individual players.” With that, TH have much to show during the semi-finals match against KR. And you’ll be sorely sorry if you miss such a display of splendour.
Until then,
Prisca
